Welcome

The Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing Lab (UPCL) is a specialized research lab within the Department of Computer Science at Ryerson University. Established in 2005, UPCL's research focuses on the convergence of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Mediated Social Networks and Mobile Computing.

Processing situational information such as human factors around a mobile user and inferring optimum software behaviour in real-time are important steps towards the evolution of mobile software.  Following these principles, the research at UPCL is divided into the following research categories:

  • Computer Mediated Social Networks: usage of volatile networks in the design of social inference models
  • Context-Aware Computing: design of self-adaptive and context-aware frameworks in distributed sensor networks
  • Mobile HCI: distraction-free pervasive computing to increase the usability of mobile software
  • Mobile Intelligence: analyzing the new models of resource-driven inference techniques such as Neural Networks on restrained devices such as mobile computers

Currently UPCL has seven research members and is involved in four active projects supported by major industry leaders such as Apple, IBM Canada and Research in Motion. UPCL is funded by Ryerson University, the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization and Ontario Centres of Excellence, with additional project-based assistance from industry partners in Canada and Europe.
